Scripture:  Do not remember the former things or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?  Isaiah 43:18-19a

Meditation:  This passage is like a riddle: the word “things” may be concrete, or it may be spiritual. Stuck in our human times – our time, our calendar, our ways of tracking movement, progress, regressions, “the things of old” that we treasure give us balance, ballast, a stake, a place. Could these be the former things not needed? Or should we be looking to the “things” outside of our time and inclusive of all time? The new thing, invisible but present encompasses all things, “springs forth” always, but demands that we seek it, that we perceive it.

Prayer:  May our times not limit our embracing of new things, as Isaiah teaches, even though they are outside of our immediate perception. May we be open to receiving them.
