Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up to the mountain to pray.  And when he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzlingly white.  Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him.  They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.  Luke 9:28-31

Whether or not Moses and Elijah actually appeared with Jesus, Peter, James and John saw Jesus in an entirely new light when he prayed on the mountaintop.  They saw him for who he truly was, clearly placed in the stature and lineage of God’s greatest prophets, who continue to speak to us today.  Martin Luther King, Jr. too spoke of having been to the mountaintop.

When we pray, we are in communion with all those who pray yesterday, today and in the future, whether they are from our Christian tradition or from the other great faith traditions.  This is a powerful force.

Dear God, we pray for peace and an end to this unjust and unprovoked war against the people of Ukraine.  In the name of Jesus, Amen.
